What Is the Biblical Purpose and History of Baby Dedication?

At Resurrection Community Worship Center, we believe baby dedication is a sacred and meaningful moment for families. It is a public declaration of a parent's commitment to raise their child according to God's Word and to acknowledge that their child ultimately belongs to the Lord.

 Biblical Foundation

The practice of baby dedication is rooted in Scripture:

  • 1 Samuel 1:27–28 (NASB)
A woman named Hannah prayed fervently for a child, and when God answered her prayer, she gave birth to Samuel. In gratitude, she brought him to the temple and said:

“For this boy I prayed, and the Lord has given me my petition which I asked of Him. So I have also dedicated him to the Lord; as long as he lives he is dedicated to the Lord.”

  • Luke 2:22–24
After the birth of Jesus, Mary and Joseph brought Him to the temple and dedicated Him to the Lord, following the customs of their faith and affirming their desire to raise Him in God’s ways.

These passages reflect the heart of dedication—entrusting a child to God’s purpose and care.

 The Parent’s Role

God’s plan for raising children is clearly outlined in Deuteronomy 6:5–9:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength... Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road...”

This scripture reminds us that the home is the primary place for spiritual training. Parents are called to model a life of faith, love, and obedience to God.

 Why a Dedication Ceremony?

A baby dedication ceremony is not a baptism or a means of salvation. Rather, it is:

  • A public commitment by parents to raise their child in the knowledge of God.

  • An act of worship, surrendering the child’s life to the will and service of God.

  • A community celebration, inviting the church to pray, support, and walk alongside the family.
